Implementation of Innovations in History and Philosophy: Experience of the Czech Republic
About this Book
The monograph Implementation of Innovations in History and Philosophy: Experience of the Czech Republic presents a comprehensive examination of the development of historical and philosophical sciences in the Czech Republic between 1993 and 2025. The study explores the transformation of Czech humanities following the democratic changes of 1989 and the establishment of an independent Czech state, focusing on intellectual continuity, institutional reconstruction, methodological innovation and European integration. Particular attention is devoted to the reassessment of historical narratives, the restoration of academic freedom, the renewal of philosophical traditions and the development of independent scientific research. The publication investigates how Czech historians and philosophers have responded to the challenges of post-socialist transformation, the internationalisation of academic knowledge and changing approaches to historical interpretation and philosophical enquiry. Through historical, comparative and interdisciplinary analysis, the author examines the relationship between established intellectual traditions and contemporary scientific developments, highlighting the distinctive contribution of Czech scholarship to European historical and philosophical thought.
The book systematically analyses the principal research directions, methodological approaches and scientific achievements of contemporary Czech historiography and philosophy. The historical component encompasses medieval and early modern history, the development of Czech statehood, the First Czechoslovak Republic, the Second World War, the Holocaust, communist Czechoslovakia, the Prague Spring, the Velvet Revolution and post-socialist transformation. Special emphasis is placed on the development of historical methodology, archival studies, source criticism, collective memory, oral history, social and cultural history, gender studies and digital humanities. The philosophical component examines phenomenology, existential philosophy, hermeneutics, analytic philosophy, philosophical logic, epistemology, philosophy of science, ethics, political and social philosophy, religious thought and aesthetics. Particular consideration is given to the intellectual legacy of Jan Patočka, the renewal of Czech philosophical pluralism and the emergence of contemporary debates concerning democracy, human dignity, moral responsibility, scientific rationality and artificial intelligence. The study identifies significant methodological transformations and interdisciplinary connections that have shaped the development of historical and philosophical knowledge.
A substantial part of the monograph is dedicated to the contribution of leading Czech academic institutions, research centres, intellectual communities and prominent scholars to the development of national and international humanities research. The publication examines the activities of the Czech Academy of Sciences, its institutes of history and philosophy, the Institute of Contemporary History, Charles University, Masaryk University and regional centres of historical and philosophical scholarship. Particular attention is given to the preservation and critical interpretation of intellectual heritage, the development of archival and documentary research, international academic cooperation and the integration of innovative research methods into traditional humanities disciplines. Drawing on scholarly monographs, archival sources, academic publications, institutional records and comparative research, the study provides an integrated assessment of the Czech Republic's experience in establishing a diverse and internationally connected research environment. The monograph is intended for historians, philosophers, researchers, university lecturers, postgraduate students, cultural scholars and policymakers interested in intellectual history, philosophical traditions, scientific innovation, democratic transformation and the development of European humanities.
