Implementation of Innovations in Medicine and Pharmacology: Experience of the Czech Republic
About this Book
This book presents a comprehensive examination of the development of medical and pharmaceutical sciences in the Czech Republic between 1993 and 2025. It explores how established scientific traditions, university medical schools, specialised clinical institutions, and pharmaceutical research centres adapted to the conditions of national independence, European integration, and technological transformation. Particular attention is devoted to the evolution of evidence-based and translational medicine, the modernisation of clinical research, and the emergence of an interconnected scientific environment combining fundamental biomedical investigation with advanced healthcare. The publication traces the principal stages of institutional development and examines the role of international cooperation, research infrastructure, and European scientific and regulatory standards in shaping contemporary Czech medicine.
The study analyses major achievements across cardiovascular medicine, oncology, haematology, transplantation, neuroscience, infectious diseases, endocrinology, medical genetics, paediatrics, and public health. A separate examination of pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences addresses molecular mechanisms of drug action, pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenomics, innovative drug delivery systems, pharmaceutical biotechnology, toxicology, clinical trials, and medicines safety. The book also investigates the contributions of leading Czech universities, hospitals, and specialised research organisations, including Charles University, Masaryk University, the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine, CEITEC, and regional biomedical centres. Their activities illustrate the growing importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, molecular diagnostics, personalised treatment, and the integration of laboratory discoveries into clinical practice.
Beyond documenting scientific and institutional achievements, the publication offers a critical assessment of the Czech medical and pharmaceutical innovation ecosystem, identifying its structural strengths, persistent limitations, and opportunities for further development. It considers research governance, national funding mechanisms, pharmaceutical regulation, digital healthcare, artificial intelligence, and the resilience of scientific institutions, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. A chronological overview of developments from 1993 to 2025 and a reference guide to major research institutions complement the analytical chapters. Intended for researchers, postgraduate students, medical and pharmaceutical professionals, science-policy specialists, and international research interns, the book provides a structured understanding of how the Czech Republic has developed into an important participant in European biomedical research and therapeutic innovation.
