Implementation of Innovations in Mathematics: Experience of the Czech Republic
About this Book
Implementation of Innovations in Mathematics: Experience of the Czech Republic examines the evolution of mathematical sciences in the Czech Republic between 1993 and 2025, tracing the transformation of an established intellectual tradition into an internationally integrated research system. The monograph explores the historical continuity of Czech mathematical schools following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the institutional reorganisation of scientific research, and the influence of European integration on academic development. Particular attention is devoted to the relationship between fundamental mathematical inquiry, scientific innovation, and the changing organisational and financial conditions under which mathematical knowledge is produced.
The publication provides a comprehensive analysis of the principal achievements and research directions of contemporary Czech mathematics, including mathematical analysis, algebra, geometry, topology, mathematical logic, combinatorics, graph theory, probability, statistics, optimisation, and mathematical physics. It examines the development of numerical methods, computational mathematics, stochastic modelling, and the mathematical foundations of artificial intelligence, highlighting their growing significance for engineering, natural sciences, economics, and data-driven research. Through the contributions of prominent mathematicians, influential publications, and internationally recognised research programmes, the study demonstrates how theoretical discoveries, innovative algorithms, and mathematical models have strengthened the position of Czech mathematics within the global scientific community.
A substantial part of the monograph is devoted to the leading mathematical institutions and research schools of Prague, Brno, Olomouc, Ostrava, Plzeň, and other Czech academic centres, including universities, institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and national computational infrastructures such as IT4Innovations. The book evaluates their scientific specialisations, international collaborations, contributions to researcher training, and roles in advancing interdisciplinary innovation. It also considers contemporary challenges involving sustainable research funding, international competition for scientific talent, generational continuity, and the balance between theoretical excellence and practical application. Intended for scientists, researchers, doctoral students, and participants in international academic internships, the publication offers an integrated historical and analytical perspective on the development, achievements, and future prospects of Czech mathematical sciences.
