Implementation of Innovations in Chemistry: Experience of the Czech Republic
About this Book
Implementation of Innovations in Chemistry: Experience of the Czech Republic provides a comprehensive
historical and analytical overview of the development of chemical sciences in contemporary Czechia between
1993 and 2025. It examines how Czech chemistry transformed after the establishment of the independent Czech
Republic, evolving from a scientific system based on strong twentieth-century traditions into a modern European
research ecosystem integrated into global scientific networks. The study explores the institutional,
methodological, and technological changes that shaped Czech chemical science over more than three decades,
highlighting the interaction between scientific continuity, international cooperation, and innovation.
The book analyses the development of major chemical disciplines, including organic chemistry, physical
chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology, chemical biology, biotechnology, analytical chemistry, and
sustainable chemistry. Particular attention is given to the achievements of leading Czech research institutions,
including the Czech Academy of Sciences, the University of Chemistry and Technology Prague, Charles University,
Masaryk University, Brno University of Technology, CEITEC, and regional chemical centres. The publication
demonstrates how Czech researchers successfully combined fundamental scientific investigation with technological
applications in medicine, industry, environmental protection, and advanced materials development.
A central theme of the book is the transformation of chemistry itself in the twenty-first century. Czech
chemical science increasingly moved beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries towards interdisciplinary
research connecting chemistry with biology, physics, engineering, computational science, and artificial
intelligence. The development of green chemistry, sustainable technologies, digital approaches, and molecular
design reflects the changing role of chemistry as a scientific field capable of addressing global challenges
related to health, energy, environment, and technological innovation.
The book presents the history of Czech chemistry not only as a sequence of scientific achievements but as the
development of a complex research ecosystem based on institutions, scientific communities, education, and
international cooperation. The period 1993–2025 demonstrates how a medium-sized national scientific system
successfully preserved its historical expertise while adapting to the requirements of contemporary European and
global research. The experience of Czech chemistry represents an important example of scientific transformation,
showing how continuity and innovation can jointly contribute to long-term scientific excellence.
